Part of what makes social networks so attractive is the fact that they are very easy to use. It doesn't take much effort to friend someone on Facebook or participate in short little online exchanges. It's much more difficult to interact in the real world. But the extra effort to show that you actually care about others brings lots of benefits for them and for you.

I agree with the assessment that you are best able to help people when you can vouch for them professionally. I've been trying to use my network in LinkedIn to help various people I know connect with recruiters. Having been around a while in my chosen field plus having just completed a job search myself actually built up my network quite a bit and made me more credible and a known commodity to people receiving my messages. I've helped at least one person get a job that way as well as secure several interviews for another. I wouldn't be able to be as broad about old college friends or their young relatives lacking direct knowledge.
